Space Planning
Split into modular wings, each block serves as a medical care unit providing specialist treatments for the young and the elderly. The blocks rise to a maximum height to six stories to evoke a more ‘human scale’ sense of connectivity to the building mass.
Access and Logistics
The ambulance access path is grouped with the emergency department, with the podium serving the diagnostic facilities, operating theatre rooms and the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).
The hospital is designed as a vehicle-free, pedestrians-only campus, with direct access by public buses and located in close proximity to a Metro Rail station.
Green Spaces for Healing
WHC is Singapore’s first hospital with a purpose-built parkland curated to help heal patients and encourage social interaction for greater mental well-being. The gardens will link to future parklands already in development, while serving as a buffer against the busy Seletar Expressway.
With ample viewing opportunities within each ward to the lush tropical gardens and parklands, this visual connectivity to nature has been scientifically proven to aid the healing process by changing the patients mood in alignment with the perception of well-being
Sustainable Design
PV panels placed on the roof serve to off-set energy consumption from the power grid. Lush green vertical planters on the façade will limit heat gain and act as a cooling blanket to reduce energy cost. The outdoor ground area is designed to double up as a series of rainwater collection channels redirecting water to irrigate the green spaces.
